Stanford PhD Engineer Making Tools for Health & Sustainability

Darrell Omo-Lamai is a Materials Science and Engineering PhD student at Stanford University, where he is also a Knight-Hennessy Scholar (full-tuition scholarship program for emerging leaders admitted to Stanford). He obtained a combined BS/MS degree in Materials Engineering from Drexel University in 2023. During his time at Drexel, he worked to increase water access in rural communities in Ecuador and El Salvador as Treasurer and Travel Coordinator of Drexel’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders, and to increase minority participation in STEM as President of the university’s chapter of Material Advantage (an organization that fosters participation in the field of materials science). He was also awarded the Drexel Global Scholarship—a full-tuition scholarship for undergraduate students with demonstrated potential for leadership and academic excellence. Hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, Darrell explores the principles that govern materials structure (e.g., how atoms are arranged, how light interacts with matter, how chemical reactions unfold over time) with hopes to advance the development of sustainable materials in emerging economies.
